🏔️ Guide’s Note: The 2026 Nairobi Update
As of 2026, Kenya has replaced its visa system with the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). If you are entering Kenya to take a bus to Tanzania, you must apply for this eTA online at least 72 hours before arrival. Additionally, entering Tanzania via the land border from Kenya now strictly requires a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate. Don’t get stuck at the border—ensure your paperwork is ready!
Kilimanjaro outfitters begin their trips from two main Tanzanian cities – Moshi and Arusha. The simplest way to travel to these destinations is by flying into Kilimanjaro International Airport, sometimes referred to as KIA (airport code: JRO).
Arriving via Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
Once you arrive at JRO, it is simple to take a taxi or private vehicle to Moshi or Arusha. Both cities are approximately 45-60 minutes away. In 2026, a standard taxi costs approximately $50 per vehicle to Moshi and $60-$70 to Arusha. We recommend pre-booking your transfer for peace of mind.
The price of international flights into JRO varies widely. While fares can range from $1,400 to $3,500, we consider anything under $1,800 a fair price for a round-trip ticket from the US or Europe. KLM, Qatar Airways, and Ethiopian Airlines are the most reliable carriers serving this route.
Should You Fly into Nairobi (NBO)?
It is often cheaper to fly into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi, Kenya, as it is a larger regional hub. However, there are hidden costs and time constraints to consider:
- The eTA & Fees: You will need a Kenyan eTA ($30-$35) and a Tanzanian Visa.
- Travel Time: The drive from Nairobi to Arusha takes 6-7 hours via the Riverside Shuttle or a private car. Including the border crossing at Namanga, this can turn into a full day of travel.
- Regional Flights: Alternatively, you can take a 50-minute regional flight (Precision Air or Kenya Airways) from NBO to JRO, which often costs between $250 and $500 round-trip.

Our Recommendation: While Nairobi can save you money on airfare, it adds layers of complexity and physical fatigue before your climb. Most of our customers find it much more practical and less stressful to fly directly into Kilimanjaro International Airport. We are happy to coordinate your pick-up from either location—just let us know your flight details!
