A group of us are going to head to Kili in Feb 09. Very interesting post here. Hopefully we will be in that 84% of happy climbers who reached the top and had a great time along the way!!

I have been considering climbing this mountain, but am rather discouraged by the requirement to take a whole baggage train up with me. I think it would really distract from the hike. It is clearly a climb to be taken seriously due to the altitude, but I just can't imagine having someone else carry my gear, nor do I want to have someone cook for me etc, or unchosen company.

I've climbed similar mountains though with less altitude, sometimes in the winter lugging glacier gear plus downhill skis. Never much higher than 5000M, but seems like one could handle it alone.

Is it possible to pay a fee to do this hike alone? I understand the need for revenue and would gladly pay even more to be left alone. In order to keep it legit, perhaps an arrangement for a shadow guide that would only climb if prescheduled descent time not kept?

Thanks for any ideas,
